A Claret and Blue History

DUFC - A Claret and Blue History by Brian Whelan
Drogheda man Brian Whelan has recently completed a book on the history of his local League of Ireland football team Drogheda United Football Club (DUFC).

Featured inside is an extensive biography of ex-Drogheda United and Belfast Celtic's legendary goalkeeper Tom 'Hop' Breen, including some previously unknown information and stories.

Breen originally came from the town of Drogheda, and was actually born but a stone's throw from their ground United Park on the Windmill Road.

He left the town aged 18, signing for Newry before moving on to Belfast Celtic for two separate spells.

Brian's research originally lead him to the Belfast Celtic Society website over a year and a half ago. Through our Memory Lane pages he was able to get in contact with Breen's daughter Linda Mooney (nee Breen) to learn more about the man.

Brian also contacted Manchester United (a former club of Breen's) to gather any information they might have had. Also, two very rare photos (one a caricature) of Breen from his Manchester United days are to be found in the book's photos section.

"DUFC, A Claret and Blue History" takes you on a nostalgic journey through the history of Drogheda United Football Club. This anecdotal account (240 pages long, including a 20 page photo section) of the club’s history is told through the words, opinions and stories of over 70 people, including; those who have played for, administered, observed and followed DUFC.

All the proceeds from the book sales will be donated to the local Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre, which offers invaluable support to cancer patients and their families. The book is priced at E15 (excluding Postage and Packaging). Brian can be contacted via www.drogsbook.com or at drogsbook@gmail.com for further information on how to purchase a copy of the book.
